UK Imports and Exports
UK import and export taxation relating to all corners of the globe is an area of interest for Eamon but he is often asked about
some areas in particular:
- US Trade with the UK
For US firms exporting into the UK the tax regime can sometimes seem both familiar and also very foreign.
But the costs of getting UK tax compliance wrong can be expensive, both in unexpected tax due and disrupted
business opportunities.
The maze of UK tax can often trap US exporters, especially because of the complex interaction in UK tax
law between domestic and European tax regimes.
Services and Electronic Service
Service exports into UK, or elsewhere in the European Community, can be difficult with the rules on both the
place of origin and nature of a service being a minefield, especially where electronic services are concerned.
Taking time to get your tax right at the start is certainly worth while.

- China Trading with the UK
Trade between China and the UK is growing fast as China re-emerges as a world economic superpower. But the
tax implications can be considerable with sometimes unforeseen pitfalls, whether with exports or imports of
goods or services.
For goods or services coming into the UK the tax regime can be complex. Disputes with the UK tax authority,
HM Revenue & Customs, can arise sometimes years after the event and any additional tax assessed can sometimes
be very considerable.
In particular a lot can turn on being able both to show and prove the correct Chinese origin of goods sent
from China to the UK so that the right duty and other taxes are paid at the time.
A recent case Eamon took in this area involved a client who had incorrectly imported from China and whose
records were very closely analysed by HMRC.
