Who is Eamon?

Eamon McNicholas B.A., A.C.M.A., Dipl Law, A.I.I.T. was called to the Bar in 1994 and as an experienced Barrister specialising in Tax, practises in litigation and advisory work for VAT, duties, direct taxes (corporate and personal) with related European Community and Human Rights aspects.

He is particularly experienced and has had great success with VAT and duties tribunals in both assessment and evasion cases and he also specialises in European law based indirect or transition taxes.

He has been a member of the Attorney General's Panel for a large part of his career, often appearing for and advising HM Revenue and Customs, and so has extensive experience on both sides of the fence!

A Successful Litigator as well as an Advisor
In addition to civil litigation, Eamon is a very experienced and successful tax litigator appearing regularly before the High Court, the Court of Appeal, where he has had quite some success, and VAT & Duties Tribunals since 1995.

He has expertly managed a broad range of Tribunal cases from short applications to highly complex cases. Eamon serves on various committees: he is an associate member of the Institute of Indirect Taxation and serves on their education committee; he currently serves on the London Society of Chartered Accountants - Tax Committee; the VAT Practitioners Group - West end chapter and the London Chamber of Commerce Tax Committee.

Eamon also serves on the Joint VAT Consultative Committee (JVCC), the main liaison group for HMRC discussion with tax professionals and the business world about developments in VAT.

As well as television and radio interviews, he publishes regular articles in various finance and tax journals, writes a monthly digest of tax cases in TaxVoice for the Institute of Indirect Taxation (IIT) and a tax summary in Law Brief Update. He has also published and lectured in the area of Climate Change Levy and other environmental taxes.

All this and a Chartered Management Accountant too

Before the Bar Eamon qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant, working mainly in the financial services sector. His accounting knowledge includes several years financial reporting and a wide range of project and management accounting together with internal audit and control work. His accountancy and audit experience is extremely valuable in complex tax cases, as many of his clients have found to their advantage!
